Should I believe this or is it too far fetched? - "phone calls to a number which I don't recognize."

I recently reviewed my phone records and discovered that there are at least a hundred phone calls to a number which I don't recognize.

The calls are made late at night when I am asleep or when I am at work. There are also many calls made for a few minutes each at the same time every evening when I walk my dog.

Further investigation revealed that the phone number belongs to a man my wife dated, and was madly in love with(he dumped her to go back to his old girlfriend) before we started dating some 26 years ago.

When I confronted her she claimed that they only spoke on the phone and he was there to listen to her because I was too self absorbed in work,etc.

She claims to have never met up with him. Should I believe this or is it too far fetched?
